Windsurfing
Vassiliki is Internationally Recognised as one of the Leading Windsurfing Resorts in Europe. This is because of the ideal weather conditions found in the bay. The windsurfing season generally starts in April and goes through to the first week in October, with July and August being the most popular months.
Vassiliki bay is wide and sheltered, and is noted for it's afternoon wind known as 'Eric'. On a good day, the wonderful sight of hundreds of windsurfers speeding across the water is very spectacular.
With Vassiliki being a relatively wide bay surrounded by mountains the village of Vassiliki is relatively sheltered, so the ideal windsurfing conditions can be found further down the bay in the popular area named Ponti, where all the windsurfing clubs can be found.
Vassiliki's extraordinary local wind phenomenon (Eric) is renowned throughout the international windsurfing community. The wind changes in direction and strength through the day offering ideal windsurfing conditions for all. With the warm, clear sea water it enables you to stay in the water for as long as you like.
Morning Windsurfing: Beginners have a gentle start with the light on-shore breeze and calm, flat sea which makes learning and practicing easy.
Afternoon Windsurfing: The more advanced windsurfers can go as wild as they like in the howling cross-shore winds. This is essentially a thermal wind, accelerated by the dramatic high mountain on the right overlooking the bay. The sea remains fairly flat, but there is some great chop for stunts. Windsurfers can be seen going far out in the sea towards Ithaka Island.
